A Letter from our Alumni President

As the new president of the LCA Alumni association, I thought I should send something out in the first newsletter after our 2006 homecoming. We had a great time at our annual homecoming. However, attendance was less than usual. I’m hoping that declining attendance isn’t a developing trend. I realize that it’s a little difficult to get pumped-up and excited about a school that has not existed for over 10 years. However, most people I talk to each year don’t regret coming. Little Creek probably holds a more important role in my life than most of you because I arrived at the school as a snotty-nosed kid of 5 years old, and my parents continued to live and work at Little Creek until it closed in 1994. However, I’m hoping that many of you developed values and friendships that still have at least a small part in your life, and you just might enjoy a visit back to Little Creek.

We had perfect weather for the weekend (except for those in the area who were probably praying for rain to end the drought.) The weekend program is included in the letter. Donald Chase had the sermon, and discussed the importance of looking forward rather than backward, because the best is yet to come. Without discounting our many fine preachers who graduated from LCA, his sermon proved in the best Little Creek tradition, that a peanut farmer is just as capable of preaching as an ordained pastor. Being a wanna-be musician, I also especially enjoyed the fine music as usual.

Note the insert regarding a memorial for Prof Straw. Based on the input we received, nine responses and six liked the idea of a gazebo and Carillon system. Please let Ann Goodge or me know any suggestions you have regarding such a memorial along with funds you would pledge for any specific suggestion. If something on the “campus” of Little Creek is suggested, the Little Creek Sanitarium may be able to share in this project because the school campus no longer exists.

This was the first year that “Prof” and Mrs. Straw were not with us at the homecoming. However, the numerous tributes given regarding the character and deeds of Prof were fondly recounted and remembered. Mrs. Straw remains at Little Creek Sanitarium in poor health. I’m not sure of her mental capacity because strokes have left her with limited communication ability. For those who may be interested, this was also the first time my father was unable to attend because of poor health of body and mind. He will be 100 on November 25. We do not plan any specific celebration because his mental capacity is significantly diminished. Ma Jones turned 109 in October and continues to live at Heritage Academy with full-time live-in helper. I visited with her a few months ago, and her mind is surprisingly sharp.

During the next 2 years (assuming that I remain in the US) I hope to work in the following areas:

  • Increase attendance at the annual homecoming. I’m looking for ideas that would cause more of you to attend. What could we provide that would perk your interest? Evidently my mother’s sweet roles are not enough to cause everyone to come!
  • Start e-mailing the newsletter (rather than mailing) to people to would prefer this. Postage goes up every year, and most of us (even the older electronically challenged alumni like me) use e-mail more than the postal system. Ann tells me that we have very few e-mail addresses. Please send Ann and me your e-mail address and let us know if you would prefer to receive the newsletter via e-mail. (L.Peek@juno.com and anngoodge@comcast.net). We promise not to flood your e-mail box with spam and weekly updates of whatever.
  • Start including more articles in the newsletter informing others of interesting things that you are doing. Of course this will be up to you. These articles/news bites should be short and to the point.
  • Include a financial report in the newsletter showing the status of our funds. The alumni voted a few years to request $25 annual dues. I don’t think most people paid much attention to this (including me). However, it would be nice if you could send $5 if you would like to continue to get the newsletter via regular mail. The food for the weekend is always free (in the Little Creek tradition, and most of you support this with your donations for the food jar.) I would like to see the alumni help to fund some larger project each year with special donations. However, I would only support using funds specifically given for specific projects. If anyone has any ideas in this area, I am open for suggestions.

I’m anxious to hear ideas and suggestions you may have and information about you that we could put in the quarterly newsletter.

A Note From Ann

As I prepare this letter it makes me sad thinking Aunt Alice and Uncle Le sent their last Holiday Greeting to each of you last year. It makes us anxious for that Homecoming in Heaven. Aunt Alice will have her 94th birthday on November 15.

I want to say a special thank you to Donald Chase for being a MINUTE MAN and speaking for church. Donald I have reflected on your words many times.

I wish each of you a blessed Thanksgiving and Christmas.

PS: I want to encourage you to send your Alumni Dues of $25:00.

Alumni News

The Los Alamos National Laboratory announced a new scholarship in the name of Monte Mitzelfelt. They describe as follows:

The Monte Mitzelfelt Memorial Supercomputing Challenge Scholarship: Monte Mitzefelt, a long time supporter of The Supercomputing Challenge, passed away in January 2006. He worked with the Challenge in many ways. He helped set up the computer labs at the Glorieta Kickoff Conference for years; he worked as a judge, as a mentor and as a facilitator at the Kickoff Conference. He had been working closely with Challenge during the last months of his like to come up with new programs for the Challenge. A $1,000:00 scholarship will be given in his honor.

Did you notice—The article in the Adventist Review, July 19, 2007, page 8, titled “From Acorn to Oak Tree” about Wesley & Judy Olson; children Kellie, Krista & Wes, and Donna & Steve Shank; children Greg, Heather & Christy, Their children went to school here. A very interesting article.
