A Letter from our Alumni Presidient

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Mark your calendar--HOMECOMING/LCA/October 13 & 14, 2006,BE THERE!! Honor Class members (years ending with "1" or "6"), contact your classmates now. Make plans to attend together. "More" usually makes things "Merrier" a better time for all of those who come. So get on your cell phones or email or snail mail and make contact with your friends!!

Grant Goodge ('61) will be teaching the SS lesson and Michael Sutherland ('66) will be presenting the message for church.

Remember-- make arrangements for motels as there are no facilities on the campus any longer. Little Creek lives on in our memories, the land that remains, the friendships made, and the preparation we received for a life of service for our Savior.

SPECIAL NOTE: The offering last homecoming was sent to help with general rebuilding needs at Bass Memorial Academy which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Of the fourteen, or so buildings they normally work out of, they began functioning out of about three in December '05. Last year we discussed having an LCA alumni group to go help with the rebuilding but I received only 2 replies of interest so did not pursue that any further. Now we have another opportunity to help Bass. As a music teacher, LCA alumnus Ann Shaw, has "been blessed to know and work with some businesses...in Panama City that have gone through (hurricanes) and are working with her to replace/repair the eleven damaged pianos with "quality equipment at the lowest possible price". ( Example: two grand pianos purchased for the price of one, major rebuilding of 5'9" grand--most of labor donated.) Of the $45,500 total, only $21,010 is still needed. Suggestion: LCA alumni can help put music back on the campus of Bass. If you feel impresse to help, please send your tax deductible donation to Craig Zeismer, Bass Memorial Academy, 6433 US Hwy 11, Lumberton, MS 39455-7501. Mark your check "Pianos/LCA alumni" . Let's see what we can do together.

See you in October,

Claudia Woolsey

Alumni News

Susan Short Crutcher ‘83 and husband Kent have moved to Kenya where Kent is teaching at Maxwell Academy and Susan is the girls dean.

Ted Summitt ‘59 I noticed an article by Ted in the Communiqué . Summer 2006 telling of his mission trip to India and the blessings he received.

Darron Boyd ‘91 was the Georgia-Cumberland Conference Coordinator for the Revelation of Hope meetings by Mark Finley in Chattanooga, TN

James Tucker ‘56 article of interest in the Focus/Winter 2006 from Andrews University. This issue had a large section devoted to Birding at AU. At 13, Jim joined the TN Ornithological Society. One of his mentors there was James Tanner, the person who took the last universally accepted photos of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker in North America, in 1938, prior to the bird‘s recent rediscovery. Since then Jim has been very active in "Birding" circles. He especially enjoys working with younger birders, as he was helped by people like James Tanner.

It is interesting to note that Vernon & Sarah Ann McNeilus had occasion to meet socially with Mr. and Mrs. Tanner, and Mrs. Tanner has rung bells at St. John‘s with Sarah Ann for the past 17 years.

Donald Chase ‘82 has written a 6 page article in the Jan. 2006 issue of Farm and Ranch Living. The Chase family was one of 4 families spot lighted in "The Way We live" series. Donald, in describing their operation brings out " There‘s truly something Spiritual about Farming", and that growing food and fiber is not just a way to make a living, but a mission. Their main crops are peanuts, wheat and corn. Besides a busy life of work, the Chases are active in the church. Donald‘s wife Michelle ‘80 is the Church School teacher. The Chase family witnesses with their involved in the community. I wish I could include the entire article. Great job Donald!

    Deaths

Richard LaMont (Monte) Mitzefelt ‘88, age 36, passed away on January 19, 2006. Monte was a long time resident of New Mexico. During his career Monte worked as a computer programmer, marketing analyst and systems administrator. Monte will be remembered for his soft heart, love of animals, love of the outdoors, and his mentorship involving activities such as the NM Supercomputing Challenge.

Amy Manous Sheffield passed away on February 5, 2006. She had been at Laurelbrook for over six years and in a Nursing Home in Florida for a couple of years before that. It was sad to see such a brilliant mind fade. Amy taught grade school here at Little Creek for 10 years from 1948 to 1958. I will always remember her and her mother. Amy taught me for my first 7 years in school and I learned to read with her help of course, and her Mother who was blind, helped us with our reading. I was so amazed she knew when I missed a word. Also she ironed and cooked. Many of you will relate to the many things Amy helped us do, such as weave baskets, pastel painting and drawing. She was truly a delightful and talented lady.

Frederick D. Smith passed away on March 4, 2006 after a battle with inoperable cancer of the digestive track and pancreas. Fred taught at Little Creek from 1984 to 1993. Becky Cote ‘87 and Steve Connor‘87 both paid tribute to Fred at the memorial service. He was admired and respected by all of his students.

Alice Parsons Mason ‘54 passed away on May 22,2006 in Riverside, California. Alice was from Knoxville. She will be remembered as a kind and loving person who always wanted to help others.

Kenneth Downing ‘75 passed away July 5, 2006. Ken fell from his roof in May of 1998 and was left a quadriplegic. After 2 months of rehab he came home and in spite of it all continued to sing, and did quite well. This past year and a half he had many infections and simply lost his energy for life. He turned 50 on July 4, 2006 and died peacefully the following day.
